Design Process

It would seem quite apparent that there is no one creative process, and there may well be as many creative processes as there are creative people. --------------------- H.Herbeat Fox

In this session we'll go though basic problem solving process for producing small well defined projects.

Problem solving process is a logical sequence of steps which helps in streamlining creative process. There is no one absolute process. The structure is usually modified to suite working style of a designer, project or an organisation. What ever may be the final structure, every process has few basic steps. They are...

Research: Involves following steps..

  • Defining project objectives
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Problem definition.

Conceptualisation: This is idea generation stage. Small (around 4 to 5cm) but proportionate sketches called thumbnail sketches are done to explore different ideas. The purpose of thumbnail sketches are to record and refine ideas with out getting bogged down with details.

Once a satisfactory range of ideas explored, the designer selects few good ideas and develops them further by trying out variations.

The selected thumbnails and variations are presented to art director and fellow designers for final shortlisting. The selected ideas (usually 2-3) are developed into full scale (1:1 size) drawings called roughs. The purpose of roughs is to get a better idea about how different elements in the design interact and look in its final/finished form. The roughs are presented to client for selection and approval.

Prototype / comprehensive: This is the final stage of designing. Here the selected rough is presented in a form which closely resembles finished product. This is also the stage where final approval is taken from client before its sent into production phase.

We'll discuss production and evaluation part when we deal with design process for larger and complex design projects.
